Dr. Muñoz is the Director of Cardiac Critical Care Medicine and Tele-ICU services. He leads a multidisciplinary team of specially trained physicians who provide intensive pediatric cardiac critical care. Dr. Muñoz is a national and international leading authority in pediatric cardiac intensive care and telemedicine, pioneering integration of telemedicine and artificial intelligence into cardiac critical care to predict complications and save young lives. Prior to joining Driscoll Children’s Hospital, Dr. Muñoz established the first Pediatric Cardiac Intensive Care Program at Jackson Memorial Hospital/University of Miami, FL. He subsequently pioneered the first Pediatric Cardiac Intensive Care unit at Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC, PA where he served as Chief of Cardiac Intensive Care, Medical Director of Global Business and Telemedicine and Director of International Affairs of the Heart Center. He was later recruited by Children’s National Hospital in Washington DC, as Chief of the Division of Cardiac Intensive Care and Executive Director of Telemedicine. He was also awarded Chair of the MacCutcheon Family Professor of Cardiac Critical Care Medicine at Children’s National Hospital.
He graduated from University del Norte in Barranquilla, Colombia, and completed his pediatric training at Hospital Militar in Bogotá, Colombia as well as Massachusetts General Hospital and Boston Children’s Hospital, Boston, MA. Dr. Muñoz completed a research fellowship in anesthesia and a clinical fellowship in pediatric critical care at Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School, followed by pediatric cardiology training at Boston Children’s Hospital and Harvard Medical School. An accomplished author and speaker, he is the lead editor of several books in pediatric cardiac critical care medicine and has served as a visiting professor or plenary speaker at more than 200 global venues. Dr. Muñoz is a Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics, the American College of Critical Care Medicine, and American College of Cardiology. He is board certified in pediatrics, pediatric critical care and pediatric cardiology.
